    Miraculous Catch                  Catch of Fish

    Luke 5

Luke 5 verses 1 to 11 is one of my favorite narratives in the Bible. Jesus had begun his public ministry and was in the process of assembling his team of twelve. In this passage we see Jesus calling Simon Peter, James and John, three hardened fisherman who probably would not have been my choice if I was looking for people to represent the most important message of all time.

But Jesus could see what the eyes of man couldn’t, ultimately giving Peter one of his greatest accolades that we read in Matthew16; “17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

But what struck me afresh as I read this passage in Luke 5 was the incredible transformation that took place in the life of Peter, this hardened fisherman, as he encountered the living God in the flesh. Can you imagine with me the thought that must have gone through Peter’s mind as Jesus asked him to go back out and fish again; here was Peter a master fisherman receiving instructions on how to fish by a carpenter who had just begun a new vocation as an itinerant preacher. Peter obviously had some doubts, but was respectful enough to call Jesus master and do as he requested, so back out to sea they went, Peter must have been tired and this was not part of the plan for his day, his schedule was being disrupted.

The resulting miracle was above and beyond anything that Peter, James and John had ever seen. The amount of fish over-filled both boats to the point of sinking. Now Jesus had Peter’s attention, there was no doubt that Jesus was of God and Peter was suddenly keenly aware of his own sinfulness, and any pride or self confidence immediately melted away. Jesus then proceeded to call Peter, James and John to leave everything and follow him. The three new disciples pulled up their boats, well out of the water because they knew that they would probably not be returning anytime soon, and they followed Jesus.

Jesus had disrupted their lives; he had stepped in and changed their plans. Peter probably had plans to grow his fishing business, and maybe even buy another boat, but that was all not to be, the call of God on his life was clear and directed to him personally. He encountered the Living God and his life was never going to be the same again.

Are you ready to have your life interrupted? Maybe you already have. If you allow yourself to be obedient to God, as Peter did, you will find the plan that God has for you may take you in a completely different direction. But it will be a direction that leads to immeasurable joy, peace and fulfillment. Be on the lookout for the interruptions to your life, today, this week or this year; one thing is certain, if you commit to being a follower of Jesus, the way ahead is full of surprises but the future is definitely certain.
